The period for nomination for a new president closed at the end of February. After a positive recommendation by three independent scrutineers and approval by the Executive Committee, I am very pleased to announce that the only candidate that put themselves forward, Fabio Gomes, has been duly elected president of the Association. Fabio will take up the role on the 1st of April, 2015, and will serve for one four year term, as laid down in our constitution. I wish him all the best and feel confident that the Association is in good hands.
I am delighted that Fabio has stepped forward to take on this role. Fabio has served in a number of different roles on the Council and Executive Committee and thus brings a wealth of experience to the job and will be able to hit the ground running. Fabio is in a great position to take the agenda of the Association forward with his leadership roles in Brazil in the Ministry of Health and increasingly in international fora, such as the WHO Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity. Fabio was part of the Brazilian delegation at the November ICN2 meeting where the Rome Declaration for Nutrition was approved by Member States. It was obvious during the sessions of that meeting in Rome that Brazil and other Latin American countries were leading the way in thinking about how to tackle the double burden of malnutrition in a holistic and integrated way. The recent Brazilian dietary guidelines are an example to the rest of the world as to how these should look to promote healthy ways of eating.
