Hanaa Amiirah Sohawon

I live in a small tropical island, Mauritius, which is located in the Indian Ocean. Mauritius forms part of Sub-Saharan Africa, and is a member of the SADC Countries. Unfortunately, the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases is quite high in Mauritius. As I am the holder of a BSc (Hons) Nutritional Sciences (with Specialisation in Dietetics), I have mastered the concepts behind diet-disease relationship. I also possess an MSc in Public Health.

I have been interested in public health for the following reasons:

  • To use quantitative and qualitative skills in public health practice such as public health ethics, health needs assessment, health equity audit, health service/ health policy evaluation, prevention and early intervention for health risk behaviours including substance misuse, health intervention planning, health protection (surveillance and intervention including disaster management) and application of microeconomics to healthcare;
  • To develop skills in the design, analysis, interpretation and critical appraisal of epidemiological and health services research;
  • To apply research methods to selected areas of epidemiology and/or health intervention evaluation;
  • To apply their understanding of the epidemiology, aetiology and prevention of chronic diseases including mental illness in practical settings;
  • To analyze the challenges in global health and approaches to the evaluation of global health initiatives;
  • To evaluate emerging epidemics and threats and infectious disease outbreak investigation and response.

In a nutshell, my vision is to work towards a healthier world.
